Hello? He's like really Scottish and like this is Scotland

I was watching Highlander the other night and something occured to me.

This a film about a Scotsman, set for a lot of the time in Scotland.

So whose idea bright idea was it to cast Sean Connery as a Spaniard?

 

In a lot of his films they have to go to some lengths to explain away his unchanging accent."Oh cousin Abdul went to school in Edinburgh. Well we are nomadic tribesmen afterall :roll:"

 

This time you wouldn't have thought they would need go through the same sorts of contortions.

I think the funniest was when he was a Russian submarine captain in 'The hunt for Red October' not only did he fail to maintain a convincing Russian accent throughout the film (mind you neither did Sam Neill) his Russian is really bad (he had to speak Russian lines for some scenes in the film).

 

It is a good movie though.

Yeah I remember that too. They had to speak Russian at the start of the film with accompanying English subtitles and then all of the sudden they changed to

speaking English with Russian accents (Connery and Neill excepted )

 

It was if a suit rushed down from Marketing, shouting "Hey! Drop the substitles now! We have to sell this sutff in the States.".

Claim to fame:

 

I was there when they were filming the battle scenes for Highlander. A friend and I had just finished a climb on Buchaille Etive Mor. As we pulled over the top we noticed some smoke drifting up from the top end of Glen Etive and looking down we saw loads of hairy-arsed highlanders battering each other!!! It was surreal to say the least. Got even more surreal when we called into the Kings House for a few pints. It was full of `em, complete with blood and wounds!!!! Sean wasn`t there though, he`d completed his filming there a few weeks earlier.

I lived in Fort William whilst they were filming Braveheart & met most of the cast - including Mel Gibson !

 

My Bro was also the stand in for the kid playing the young William Wallace.

 

Glen Nevis was amazing with all the sets up for the village scenes.
