Server Fault launches, Collaborative Q&A for Sysadmins.

One more nail in the coffin for experts-exchange!

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of questions can I ask here?

Server Fault is for system administrators and IT professionals, people who manage or maintain computers in a professional capacity. If you are in charge of ...

* servers

* networks

* many desktop PCs (other than your own)

... then you're in the right place to ask your question! Well, as long as the question is about your servers, your networks, or desktops you support, anyway.

Please note that Server Fault is not for general computer troubleshooting questions; if you paid for that desktop hardware, and it's your personal workstation, it is unlikely that your question is appropriate for Server Fault.

Do look around to see if your question has already been asked (and maybe even answered!) before you ask. As long as you've looked, if you end up asking a question that has been asked before, that is OK and deliberately allowed. Other users will hopefully edit in links to related or similar questions to help future visitors find their way.

Ha Ha!

Oh well, is that different than printing to a printer using a postscript driver? Does that still translate PCL to Postscript? Most networked printers I have seen come with PCL5, PCL6 and Postscript drivers but I guess for $1000 you must mean something else?

That's the thing, I don't know. Obviously a driver is something that installs on the server (Windows Server 2003 in this case), so it would be perfectly possible to have a driver that contained a Postscript interpreter and simply converted to whatever the printer actually understands. The module they're offering us with this printer installs on the printer itself in some way - I imagine it can interpret Postscript and directly control the printing hardware to produce an image, but I still have no idea how that makes colour reproduction better than PCL.

Anyway, back on topic: anyone else signed up for the StackOverflow Dev Day in London? Handily timed for autumn half term, it looks like there'll be a bunch of interesting stuff to be discussed. Seemingly there's now about 800 people coming along, so it's going to be fairly busy, too!
