Hello there,

we are setting up a new library in our primary school and would like to book the books in and out properly using a computerised system. It can be either Windows XP or Mac OSX 10.4

The cheaper the better (preferably free!)

Possibly looking for some sort of barcode scanner system too to sign the books in and out...

Anyone got any experience of this? Can you help me out with suggestions?

Thanks!

It isn't free by any means but I consider Junior Library to be an excellent product, I work for several primary schools who run the software and find it easy to implement as well as having a sensibly laid out GUI for kids, librarians etc. Good support and easy to upgrade too.

Don't know how the DB stands up to heavy access like a secondary might get through but for a primary I've found it great - thumbs up.

Koha is free and open source.

You just want one that emulates a keyboard, one that "types" the barcode in for you. These start from around £30 on Amazon, eBay or wherever.

Access-it Library Software. Cross-platform and web-based. Has the ability to use image-based search as well as the standard search for books. Easy to use and works very well.

Updating the software is great, it's all automated even the client end and is also cross-platform. Any issues and support is right there. I've uploaded my DB and had the support team build me a new set of installers with my DB integrated into for the following day.

What sort of price is Access-it?
