Terminal Services/VMWare/?

Just wondering is there anything like this thats webbased so that a user could login to a client session via a browser and it behave roughly the same as a desktop machine doesn't need sound but may need local printers?

When you install IIS on a server there is usually the option to install the tsclient component. That lets you go http://yourservernamehere/tsclient and it'll bring up a window in internet explorer with a web based MSTSC client type doo daa.

 

It sounds like that's what you're after.

The only problem with that solution would be the TS Cals I need. Are there any other options? Windows 2000 didn't need TS Cals but Windows 2003 does

Windows 2003 doesn't need TS cals if you're just using it for remote administration, just like 2000. You need CALs if you're going to use it as a TS server with multiple users. That is the case with both 2000 and 2003.

 

Otherwise, theres always VNC I guess. That has a java based web client sitting on port 5900. Disadvantage of that is that you can't have more than one person using it at once.

Server 2k3 will give you something like 90 days trial with your server offering a load of MSTSC connections then automatically restrics you to 3 if you dont register it as a proper terminal server IIRC.

 

But yeah, no TS cals needed and there is always VNC as Norphy said.

 

I always found VNC to be very slow really and i'd be making mistakes because the screen wouldnt keep up with what i was typing etc.

I have a feeling that remote desktop on XP can also be viewed through a browser - logs off the current user though.

 

What do you intend to do?

 

Another option is to make a DVD with a VMWare image and the player on it... you need to then install the player but that is free... and you should really buy VMWare workstation to make your image (approx. £130) and you'll need to license everything in the VM.

 

BTW - TS CALs are only about £9 each.

What company do you get the licenses from?, we're looking at getting TS client licenses and have been quoted at around £15-18 from Ramesys.

 

These were for TS User Licenses.

We got our last lot from Rameys for about £9 a piece on the SST Select Licence.

@ashok: I tend to get device CALs but that shouldn't make a difference to the price. I too have used Ramesys... maybe it depends on the quantity?

I'd be using it as a remote desktop for the admin staff to log in from home I already use VNC and Putty to get access from the outside but I also have another server (ISA) that would allow for me to have a little more ability licensing the actual applications isn't an issue got plenty of them does the OS need to be licensed on the remote machine though? That is in addition to the licensed OS it already has?

 

Really I'm looking at a citrix type setup but I don't think I'll have the money for the software tbh got the hardware to handle it though seeing as there will only be one or two staff members using it.
