Slow Colour Laser Printer

Hello,

 

A strange request but does anybody know of a colour laser printer that can be slowed down?

 

Basically we have a colour inkjet in the library used by sixth form. It doesn't cost a lot to print because it's quite slow but unfortunately it's on its way out.

 

I want to replace it with a colour laser printer to keep costs down even furthur, however, the speed increase would mean users would use it more than the mono laser printer and thus costs would sky rocket.

 

I'm after a printer or even some software that would allow me to reduce the speed to a colour inkjet speed.

How slow is slow? If a new colour laser is too fast, you could consider buying a refurb printer (from ICT Direct for instance).

Not sure if you can get hold of hem still but we have a few HP 2600N's that are pretty slow compared to the 4700N's for example, maybe ask ICT-Direct, CPLTD or Westwood Associates if they can get hold of one for you?

I've not experimented with it, but there is an option in windows not to start printing until and entire job has spooled.

 

EDIT: Just had a look, the Samsung CLP310 has a quoted colour print speed of 4ppm (though the B&W speed is faster). I'm guessing it must use a 4 pass method.

You could get creative and put a script in place that runs regularly. Pauses all but the current job.. waits one minute and then starts the next.. Anything new just gets paused straight away... I'm sure it would be possible with a little care.

 

Obviously anyone would see what was happening but if you pointed out that it was a cost saving measure designed to force people to either wait for the more expensive colour document or print on the mono. I'm sure SMT would back you up if you noted the potential costs/savings involved.
