MLG organising class sites

Our school soon will be using assignment web part to assign work to students, we have desided to use the following option for the our class sites. I would like to know if any one else has used this option and what are there experiences or even you have used other options like all hidden sites or all collaborative sites,

Option

A mix of hidden and collaboration sites. In this set up some of the sites are hidden as per possibility 2 and some are collaboration sites as per possibility 1. The hidden ones would normally be for the lower years and the collaboration sites for the upper years where there's more class specific work and discussion taking place. This would be an example of where different templates could be used for the hidden and collaboration classes.

 

Also what do you think a template for a class site should have in it?

Our class sites are mainly set up as blog sites, with a couple of extra web parts added - normally a content editor to provide a welcome message, and an announcements web part for the teacher to add messages for the class.

 

In this set up the teacher can provide lead material to the class through blog posts, and class members can add comments.

 

We also have a wiki library attached for any teacher that wants it, and a link to the assignment diary filtered for that particular site.

 

Although that is a common platform for a class site, they are adapted where teachers want them to be.

Thanks Mark I do under stand the rest of it but when you say

what do mean by that isn't assignment diary a webpart which should be added to the template or should it be added to a separate site and then put a link in template for classes sites

By "a link to the assignment diary filtered for that particular site" I think mleighton is referring to a link to the SLK data by putting the Assignment List Web Part on the page showing only that site's assignments.

The web part has a option in its properties whether to show assignments for all sites or just that particular site. It's typically used in 2 places:

1. A top level staff/pupils entry point
   
2. On the individual class sites
