Windows 7 Running

Well got windows 7 running on the very nice EEE PC that Simon at cp sorted out for us.

Runs really well and will be even better once increased memory to 2GB.

Ah, been waiting to see someone try it on an Eee. Runs far better than XP on my el-freeby laptop and have been itching to get hold of a "netbook" with it

Works well..

 

Installing took about 40 mins at most (wasn't timing left it to run and came back to it).

 

Seems to run well and in fact better than XP on it. Apparently MS are talking to Asus and getting 7 as standard os on the netbook range.

Installed it on my Samsung NC10 tonight and it runs very well even with AV installed and i haven't added any extra RAM yet. It's faster than XP was in general running, it does take slightly longer to boot but with hybrid sleep that shouldn't be a problem it takes three seconds to come back from sleep

 

So far I'm very impressed the UAC is way less intrusive i've hardly noticed it and the frequent odd freezes in explorer that I noticed in Vista have gone as well.

 

The install also uses under 10Gig on the disk.

I had to download Easy Display Manager for Vista as the XP version wouldn't work properly

How does the rather large task bar look on the little screen?

I selected use small icons and it's half the size, it looks fine now. I also ditched the favorites bar in IE and everything looks great now. IE8 seems very fast much more responsive than IE8 was on XP.

Ah i didnt think of that. Thats how i have it set on my Vista machine at work. I dont like the bigness of Windows Vista and 7

No i need to find a way top make the desktop icon smaller, i'm sure it looks fine on high res monitors but on low res they need to be smaller.

First thing is set the taskbar to autohide and also drag it to left/right hand side. They certainly have improved the way taskbars look when at the side of screens.

 

As for desktop icons not tried it on windows 7 yet but assume would be same as vista. if hold CTRL button and scroll mouse wheel up and down then it resizes the desktop icons.

Ooooh, didn't know about the ctrl & mousewheel on desktop. Very handy in browsers too

 

Re the taskbar on the side of the screen, it's probably my favourite change. That way you can make proper use of the popular widescreen monitors and laptops without sacrificing too much vertical space

Yes that's it I remember now, all the little 'fixes' I discovered In Vista are flooding back. I'd forgotten them as I stopped using Vista. Any idea how to do it when you only have the trackpad?

 

 

If you're auto hiding the taskbar why have it at the side of the screen as well?

I tried auto-hiding the taskbar but it keeps popping up when I don't want it to! It's bad enough in Windows 7 already - move your mouse pointer near the taskbar and several windows blink at me driving me to distraction. It's 'enhancements' like this that will drive me back to Ubuntu!

I wasnt too keen on the chunky taskbar either, but using small icons is much better!

 

Ive got it running in a VM machine, and its pretty nippy in and out of office apps, and IE8

Just bad mouse control! I used to use the Dell Dock app - but that used to pop up anytime I went near the top of the screen. Why can't windows be clever enough to know when I want the bar and when my mouse is near the bottom of the screen for another reason?

 

Try opening a few windows with different apps and then mousing from left to right along the task bar...

 

(and small icons just look .... erm wrong. Well on 9" screen anyway!)

I don't have a 10" screen but I like the small icons.

Ah i didnt think of that. Thats how i have it set on my Vista machine at work. I dont like the bigness of Windows Vista and 7

 

on a large monitor i cant go back to the WinXP looks, the larger title bar and W7 setup is a great step forward i think. I get to work and use XP and get reminded of clunkier older days! Havent yet tried the larger task bar on a small device but couldn't recommend more on a big screen. (I havent used Vista since the release of the W7 beta)

Well i'll still be putting 2Gb RAM in my NC10 but i'll honestly say that it's running like a dream at the moment i've not seen it running short on memory once yet it usually sits around 500-600Mb usage.

 

It's a big improvement over Vista and may finally convince me to ditch XP. It certainly gives UNR a run for it's money at the moment as well.
