Turning back on after shutting down (not Wake on LAN)

This has been confusing me for days now...

 

I have a handful of computers that will shut down and power off..... but then turn themselves back on within a few minutes!

 

To confuse me even more, the computers are different makes, have different componants, have different PSU's, and different network cards! There is nothing obvious in event logs.

 

It is definately not wake on lan....

We DO use it here, but for purposes of elimination have disabled it in BIOS on these machines yet the issue still exists!

 

Does anyone have any ideas!?

I had this on some older machines, if I remember correctly it was something to do with API capability. I think I had to upgrade the drivers or some such. Sorry not much help really.

Last one I had of these was a teacher who hadn't seen the word "restart" in the shutdown box... once shown the drop-down menu and that it needed to say "Shutdown", the PC started "working"

Sods law - I've figured it out! (Took me days to get round to posting a message and resolved it just after posting!)

 

In case anyone reads this in the future and is curious...

 

The issue was that we use Altiris Deployment Solution on one of our networks. The stations affected were running a task via Altris that hadn't quite finished at the point the user shut the PC down. This meant that the tast was still running at the stage of sending a Wake-on-lan signal to the client.

 

It's slightly odd, but the way Altiris seems to work is that if the task doesn't finish, or the client can't communicate with the server, the client agent actually remembers the last server command...

So although Wake on LAN had been disabled in BIOS the computers Altris Client software remembered it needed a Wake on LAN event.

 

I'm not sure it's meant to work like this, but suddenly remembered something similar about 4years ago and went to look! Doh!

and how often that happens ... I read it somewhere ... de-bugging by conversation. As soon as you've put it into words a solution appears - it's magic:)
