Hard Drive Recovery

I'm just after someone who has used a Data Recovery Company. The Heads Secretary HDD has failed. She swears all the data was stored on the network, but no, it was all on her 'C' Drive.

 

We've swapped out the controller board, frozen the drive (chilled it really). Usual tricks. HDD is not seen in BIOS unfortunately.

 

So, has anyone got a recommended company for this. Been in touch with a couple all ready, and looking at just under £1000 for the repairs so far.

I used Fields Data recovery Fields Data Recovery - USB, RAID & Hard Disk Drive Repair and Data Recovery about three years ago. It wasn't cheap, but cheaper than some of the others.

 

they successfully recovered what was needed.

Yeah, was sitting in one yesterday. See the USB but no HDD.

if the drive spins up try the program PhotoRec, it will scan all the HDD sectors for lost files similar to companys like OnTracks software etc. It will discover dead partitions too so it doesn't have to appear in My Computer.

If they are going to spend the money on pro recovery then I would suggest you leave the drive exactly as it is and don't try any more diy on it as you could make it more difficult for them to recover anything from it.

 

What make/model drive is it?

As someone in the know, I wouldn't use fields if it was an urgent job, but send in for the 'free' analysis (to their head office), if they come back talking of split payment, then I wouldn't go ahead. The cost will be at least £400. Any company saying it'll be less than this is either a one person in back bedroom with a screwdriver, or just plain lying.

 

And the fact that you've already done DIY work would reduce your chances, esp if you've opened it. Also board swapping alone wouldn't work you would need a board from the exact same model and batch, and to swap the ROM chips as well.

 

and FFS the freezer trick doesn't work in most cases on modern drives and it's for motor seizures not general failures, will people who have no idea what they are doing stop doing it you are just reducing your chances of recovery.

I hear the freezer trick all the time, people will try anything to save money no matter how silly the idea may be.

They were unsuccessful but you give them a vote? Thats a little strange. I looked Googled them and read some interesting articles about fake reviews and testimonials Fields post around the internet.

 

So I'll vote no for this company which I used who lost my drive and were a bunch of utter clowns.
