[XP] All Users start menu / desktop

All of our XP machines seem to be ignoring the "All Users" start menu and desktop. MEaning we have to add all the shortcuts from the "all users" area on the local machine to the users roaming profile (which is a pain for staff members with a desktop and laptop)

 

Anyone had this problem before?

 

Public Start Menu and Desktop on Vista seem to work fine.

 

Staff members have Roaming User Profiles if that is of any help.

There's a GPO that disables 'All Users'.

 

EDIT: Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\Remove common program groups from Start Menu

 

If you don't have it already, download PolicySettings.xls it's a searchable excel spreedsheet with all of MS's GPOs listed in it.

It's easier to add things tidily to the shared Start Menu (different for staff and pupils) for myself than go round tidying up stuff from the All users Start Menu on every PC.

 

If i didn't do this the start menu would become ragged and untidy making things hard to find. This way it always looks the same no matter where people log on... it's just that some Programs don't work on all machines.

We do the opposite. For me it looks untidy if you have dead shortcuts in the start menu if a particular application isnt installed on that machine. I tidy my all users start menu using a script or Server 2008 group policy depending on the school.

Same, we only have 4 XP clients left on site (Accounts department with old accounts software) and one staff member's laptop. Problem is the staff member has a laptop and a desktop. So profile is a no-go as he has local admin on his laptop (lots of proggies installed) making the start menu a joke on the laptop.

 

+ its not much hasstle to use \\PC-Name\C$\ from a server to tidy up the all-users folder.
