Andie Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I want to restore a single file with Backup Exec (Symantec). Never done it before (yes, I should have done!). Backup was set up by IT providers and seemed to be running fine. Problem is that I can't browse to single files. All of the folder structure is there, but I can't drill down to files within those folders. I have tried looking at the Help files, and these seem to say I should be able to do this. I have tried catalogging the media containing the last full system backup. Still can't drill down beyond folders. Help please!
elsiegee40 Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Can't help you with your problem, but do check before you get too bogged down whether or not you are running Volume Shadow Copy. If you are, a simple right click and choose properties for the folder then choose the 'Previous Versions' tab and it will bring up the copies taken in the last couple of weeks (or thereabouts) and you can restore from that very quickly.
Domino Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 If you're using DFS the backup has to have been taken using volume shadow copies, is it a dfs volume you're trying to recover from?

Thanks, but now I'm really worried as I don't have a previous versions tab in Properties... Domino: can you expand on what DFS stands for please? I've no idea otherwise... :o EDIT: Dynamic File System?? If so, I am still none the wiser. Edited April 27, 2009 by Andie
b4bob Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Maybe too simple but.... Check that you can see both panes of the folder browsing window. The left hand one wil only browse to folder level and yes you can expand it sidewards and totally obscure the right hand pane! 1

And yes, that was it and file is now restored. Thank you!
elsiegee40 Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 DFS = Distributed File System... i.e. Server replication IIRC you can't see previous versions under all circumstances. Try from a normal user logon rather from the server. Glad you managed to recover your file, anyway
