connecting to a shared folder

hey ppl, this should be simple but I'm having a hard time. I have two iMacs running 10.5.x. I have an external 500GB harddrive on one iMac and I created a shared folder. On the other iMac I logon as local admin I can 'connect to server' and see the shared folder. I created an .app using Apple scripting to 'mount volume' and the script works and the volume mounts after I log back on. On that same iMac I logon as a standard user and I can see the .app running at top corner but the volume does not mount:confused: I can also see and access the shared folder when I'm logged on as the standard user. The script was added to the login items for each user under Accounts. I've tried messing with the script but getting nowhere:mad: What am I missing? Am I going about this the wrong way? any help is appreciated

 

NOTE: iMacs are NOT joined to a domain. just strictly ip.

mount the drive yourself using the ip address ( assuming they are statically assigned either through dhcp or just static ip addresses ) and then create an alias of the mounted drive by right clicking on it and going to create alias or make alias or w/e it says and then just make that a login item and that should load it at startup (

 

system prefs --> user accounts --> select the user --> login items --> click + to add it as a login item

 

Also assuming you have the firewall disabled under security prefs in system prefs and also have sharing enabled on either a folder or the drive ( if thats possible ? )

thanks for your reply. how would I mount the drive myself? I tried connecting to the iMac with the external via ip and I can see it but how do I mount it?

Go --> Connect to server

 

smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/share_name

 

Assuming your using smb as the protocol ( as there is also AFP, FTP etc )

 

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the ip address and share_name is the share name of the folder / drive

 

helps if both computers both have an account with the same username and password
