I think that article is a bit of a joke to be honest. Google would like to think they're doing something amazingly innovative, but believe it or not Google we also have had this technology for years. They're called laptops/notebooks/netbooks and they come complete with batteries too! Amazing! Much cheaper than paying for a patent which I am surprised they were even granted.

I think the point is it is cheaper to buy commodity hardware then hundreds of thousands of laptops / netbooks as servers.

I would hazzard a guess it was a similar revelation to the artificial intelligance creation of theirs which discovered it liked Panda's based on analysis of Google Search results!!
