Terminal Services - xp

we are thinking of having TS through our vle or maybe just a link on our main web site. it will be hosted on a windows 2008 server but what i want is when they login i want them to get the xp style theme along with the programs they want to be able to run. this will be over https of course

 

what is the best way ?

In Windows Server 2008 i dont think it is possible. The closest you will get is the Classic Theme.

Yeah in Windows 2008 you only get 2 options

Classic or Vista...

 

For the vista theme to work you need to install the Desktop Experience Role/Feature and the client must be using the latest RDP Connection Client (6.1?)

 

If you want the XP Theme you will have to install Windows 2003 and enable themes..

The XP Theme is not compatible with Windows Vista onwards - it has been replaced with Aero (Glass if supported)

 

In 2008, Aero & WMP are not installed by default - you need to install the role/feature "Desktop Experience" first

 

In Windows 2003, the XP themes were installed but the Themes service was disabled - enabling that service allowed the XP theme to be applied to 2003

 

Another problem with 2008 TS, is that the Aero theme wont apply unless you are using Microsoft RDP 6.1 - We found this with our linux thin clients - it reverts to the Classic Style.

 

Aero Glass (Transparancy) will only work across RDP if both the client and the server hardware support Glass

 

So if you really want to use the XP style theme for Terminal Services, then you need to a Windows 2003 TS ..

If you want the XP look use server 2003 not 2008 and don’t forget to turn terminal services into user mode not client mode for home use or it will cash your TS CAL licences on individual users home desktops.

well we are still running xp clients but just want to know if 2008 server supports the xp theme for when they log in

If your Remote Desktop Connection software is up to date (v 6.1), you might be able to get the Vista theme on the TS after enabling the Desktop Experience role

 

Why MS didnt allow for XP Theme support in 2008 I don't know - even if only on Terminal Servers..
