Opening Moodle Up To The Public!!!!

Arrgggg!!! (sorry i needed that)

 

Since i started my new job i have taken over a Moodle installation that was looked after my a teacher. I am now the technical guy behind it and the teacher is the coordinator.

 

He want's to open up all courses so any member of the public can see them this includes forums the lot.

 

Please can someone help me with some ammo as to why this is a very bad idea?

I've never had a problem with opening up Moodle so that anyone can to view an establishments Moodle courses, in fact I think it needs to be the default so that other educators can see/copy/improve on others work

 

Forums - different principles apply and can't see any benefit in making them publicly viewable apart from the acutal participants and lots of negatives!

BTW co-ord is probably in charge of content and aslong as not illegal, you shouldn't make editorial judgements and go along with requests

 

 

In worst case, communicate your misgivings to their boss but still comply with requests

 

Many young techs fall into the trap of trying to protect full blown adults who are empowered to make their own mistakes

One issue i can see is Members of the public seeing full students names and possibly gather a few more details.

 

he isn't an official coordinator just thinks he knows it all when it comes to moodle. Managed to bugger up permissions the other day

AFAIK even course members can't see other course members names

Agreed - keep them shut - open up activies/quizzes/assignments etc
