Updates

We recently had an Engineer tweaking our management system. He mentioned something about WUP (I think that's what he called it) was not running on the server. It was to provide windows updates to all the computers on the network. Now all the network is going crazy, updating not only critical updates but SP3 as well.

 

Please could someone let me know what he has done and how do I tweak it so it only sends out updates for 'critical' updates for the PC's.

 

I don't know if it's through GPO's, Windows services, ??????

WSUS probably.

 

There should be an mmc shortcut in administrative tools on the server he installed it on.

 

Did you give him permission to do so?

He's talking about WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) which runs as an SQL database, service and front-end suite on a server. It's generally used to control which updates get approved, and only download them from the internet once before redistributing them internally (saves 500 machines all getting the same files once a day..)
