I've bitten the bullet and decided to purchase Smoothwall SchoolGuardian.

 

I had nothing against Smoothwall 2, I enjoyed tinkering but it takes up too much time and I just want a pre built solution.

 

Does anyone else use SchoolGuardian? I've started installing it on a new swappable hard drive but didn't have time to finish the installation.

I've been testing SchoolGuardian and not had any problems apart from a NIC it didn't like when we first set it up. We're about to go live with a new box - I'll post an update next week.

I've had a couple of problems which is my own fault.

 

Because Smoothwall GPL worked on crap hardware I just kept my 2.0Ghz computer with 256Mb ram to run it on. Speaking to the tech guy and their hardware calculator they recommend at least 1GB of ram. Symptoms of this are the proxy stopping all of a sudden and it taking a age to change any settings.

 

I've got the LDAP connection working but cannot use the groups just yet because I am currently using transparent proxy and other considerations mean I can't change this.

 

I'm having to wait till the summer hols (ours start in less than 2 weeks) to get it all working.

 

All in all I am really impressed, especially by the support.
