Software Deployment

Hi all,

 

I am trying to deploy some msi's that I have created using wininstallLE.

Now these deploy perfectly fine when I deploy them using my administrator account, but when they are deployed to student machines / logon, windows will come up saying that it is deploying managed software, but once the student logs in, and windows starts to configure the software, I get an error saying that the file extension is invalid. It states the username eg simontest) is not a valid file extension.

 

Students don't have the rights to install software, but this is deployed without this in mind.

Could this be a fault with the way that the msi is built or is there another setting in GPO that needs to be changed?

 

I have made amendments to only allow aproved installs, but doesn't seem to have made any difference!

Surely you shouldn't have any HKCU entries in your msi which would stop this configuration from happening when logging on!!?

Would there not be a policy change in group policy that would override this?

Not sure tbh but msi's for deployment are best configured per machine rather than per user making HKCU entries redundant. Entries in this hive will cause the msi to re-configure/repair itself when a user logs on. Try removing these from the msi and see whether you still get this problem
