dhoward_westexetc Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 We want to disable the 'Set as desktop background' menu option for all student user accounts in Internet Explorer 7. This is a right click option. Although we set a desktop wallpaper centrally, students can still access this menu option and abuse it. Is there a setting in Group policy under user configuration which will allow this?

Jamman960 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Disabling it via Administrative tools > Control Panel > Display > Prevent Changing Wallpaper generally stops most methods of changing the wallpaper including via IE if I remember correctly. I've got the context menu disabled also though so that might be why. 2

I've enabled that policy now, but i'll keep the IE7 context menu disabled aswell anyway to be doubly sure.
AndyD Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 I am sure that wallpapers can still be changed using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer though
timbo343 Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 ^ only if you havent disabled it in group policy
dhoward_westexetc Posted March 17, 2009 Author Posted March 17, 2009 ^ only if you havent disabled it in group policy It's the Prevent Change wallpaper policy that locks it isn't it?

However, the 'prevent change of wallpaper' policy does indeed disable the 'Set Desktop Background' function on the IE context menu anyway. So that's our problem fixed!

I was going to mention this also, which is why it's not a good idea. Copying images for PowerPoint projects for example is quite a common task/skill required from pupils. There are two things I can recommend. Firstly use BGInfo to control your wallpaper for users and secondly, use mandatory profiles with pupils. Their efforts of resetting the wallpaper will soon get boring as changes are lost when they log off

Their efforts in resetting the wallpaper are only visible when you do 'lock computer'. Hopefully our policy change 'Prevent wallpaper change' will end all this! I'll look into BGinfo anyway, is it a freebe?
