Ric_ Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 I want to install Solaris 10 on a HP nx6110 laptop - I have a reason for this! The problem I'm having is getting X running and I need some help. When X tries to start, the screen goes black, flickers a few times and then I get booted back to the prompt... not posting from the laptop so can't easily copy the X output but I can get it if needs be. Ideas?
CyberNerd Posted June 11, 2006 Posted June 11, 2006 sounds like your installer got further than mine. I'm on first boot and instantly get a hardware detection screen that doesn't detect the keyboard - hence I can't proceed !?! Solaris 10 32bit AMD.

Ideas? Your graphics card isn't supported/setup correctly. As for getting output, use a serial console. Also X writes a debug log out to /var/log/XFree86.0.log (assuming it's XFree86/X.org based).
Ric_ Posted June 12, 2006 Author Posted June 12, 2006 I can view the output in the XFree86.0.log and it seems to suggest that it's the graphics card - it also mentions something about the keyboard but says that this isn't a 'critical' warning. The chipset in the nx6110 is an Intel 915 - an unsupported one I have tried that suggested i810 driver. I thought I would try the VGA driver but now I get dodgy monitor errors Will try to get some more messages tonight.
Geoff Posted June 12, 2006 Posted June 12, 2006 if there's a generic SVGA or VESA driver I would try that too. If you can, post the relevant chunks of the log file. Just out of curiosity, why Slowaris?
Ric_ Posted June 12, 2006 Author Posted June 12, 2006 @Geoff: I will also try the VESA driver tonight. BTW - it's to run some Sun management tools that are being a pain to install under Windows and Linux (and Solaris ).
