RIS WHILE IN WINDOWS

Hello,

 

We use ris here i just wondered if there is any way of, getting ris to start while an xp machine is running.

 

i.e ) install the desired template / image by commaind line or navigating to the ris setup

 

sometimes we need to build machines that are still booted, we can mstsc to them, its a bit annoying when we have to go and F12 them when we could do this from the office.

 

I know you can install xp cd from a share but it does not have all the customisations and settings we have in RIS

 

so it would be nice to set off ris from a machine that is allready on.

To do this - you would need something like SMS, now called SCCM. This allows for scheduled rebuilds or targetted rebuilds of machines even if they are still alive. These are Microsoft options... obviously there are other corporate solutions too.

i tried SMS it is not the easiest to set up i might try tackle it again

You can fully automate ris from a reboot or a cold start by editing the welcome.osc file Multiple Deployment of Windows 2000 Server/XP using RIS and if you have automatic naming of machines then it is fully automated. I have used this method in the summer hols when no one is in school to totally rebuild the network from one admin machine. Of course you also need WoL and or the ability to remote restart.
