mac_shinobi Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 ok got a netgear DG834G v3 router and have tried the 3 different firmwares available for this router and each time I unzip the zip file and get the img file type I try to upload it to the router to update the firmware and each time I get this error message : Cannot upload, please contact administrator. Can someone please enlighten me how I ensure I am download the correct firmwares and also why it is not working or whats happening ? Also if RabbieBurns is out there somewhere - can you re pm me the info you sent me a while ago as well as let me know what that link was you used to update the netgear routers firmware ( think you pmed me a link to somewhere that could update the netgears routers firmware )
RabbieBurns Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 you should do what it says and get your administrator to do it for you
RabbieBurns Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 DGTeam - The Custom DG834XX Series Router Firmware Web Site Make sure you get the right one, theres Dg834G and DG834GT etc
RabbieBurns Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Also, if its a branded netgear, from SKY or such, you might need to use the firmware recovery tool to flash it back to the generic netgear firmware first
mac_shinobi Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 where do I get the flash util to get it back to the original one - think it used to be a virgin media one as got the router off of ebay.
mac_shinobi Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 (edited) no go - that does not work. Tried the instructions on that website tried there firmware, the 3 from netgears site. Tried using the router upgrade directly on the router as well as the recovery utility and it just refuses to do it. The utility wont get any further then after selecting which network card is connected to the router it just comes up blank. I was running the RMDrv.exe before the upgrade one ( cant rememner file names as got rid of em ) Edited March 12, 2009 by mac_shinobi
RabbieBurns Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I do remember that when I recovered a netgear from the Sky firmware it took about 20 attempts before it "caught" so to speak and started sending the image.
mac_shinobi Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 tried a lot more and I get as far as the network connections ( tried both NIC's ) and the next page is just blank.
RabbieBurns Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I cant remmeber the procedure, but to use the firmware recovery tool I had to run it on the PC and reboot the netgear and hold in the button for a certain time. I might have also had to specify a 10.x static IP on my nic. Its been a while since I used it Also, are you sure youve got the correct firmware for the correct version of your dg834g as they are not interchangeable.
mac_shinobi Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 on the back / underside of my netgear router it says : DG834GSP v3
mac_shinobi Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 from what I can find seems its locked by virgin media ( ffs ) gonna have to buy a new router most likely If I want to upgrade the firmware etc.
Oops_my_bad Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 The SP would denote a special netgear build for sky/virgin/whoever I seem to recall Sky customers hacking their sky-issued DG834GT's a while back to revert to normal Netgear mode - perhaps there is a similar procedure for the G's?
mac_shinobi Posted March 12, 2009 Author Posted March 12, 2009 if yourself or someone knows how can you post back here and let me know how - thanks !

I had to use the ng recovery util to put on the generic netgear firmware then it functioned as normal.
mac_shinobi Posted March 13, 2009 Author Posted March 13, 2009 thats what I tried last night ( with all the firmware versions that netgear do for the DG834G v3 ) none and I mean NONE of them worked - just kept giving me that please contact your administrator error message. Have tried uploading the firmware through the web gui on OS X as well as on windows ( when on windows I tried both the web gui and that utility ensuring I ran the rmdrv.exe or w/e and then the upgrade exe and I kept getting as far as selecting a NIC and then it just took me to the next screen which had a blank listbox and I could not get any further then that. )
hitman2000 Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I am from australia and we have these same modems DG834GSP v3. from a company called optus. Like many others i tried various firmware and recovery methods but ultimatley it would always tell me to contact the administrator and the firmware cant be laoded. then i came across this: link Firmware link upgrade for DG834GSPV3 - Netgear - DSL Hardware - Whirlpool Broadband Forums Netgear Modem Update that page has the firmware that can be used, i have now succesfully upgraded the netgear to V1.04.13 from 1.04.05. So to all the software gurus out there download that file and look at the coding and i guess somewhere embedded in there is the permissions to allow the file to work. This firmware has not fixed my sync issues, but im hoping someone out there can reverse engineer this file and make some decent firmware. thanks.
