acquiring network address

both the Ethernet and the wireless connection in the taskbar has recently started getting stuck at the acquiring network address animation and dialogue, even though it has been assigned an IP and network is running.

 

there is no side affects, its just a bit strange.. could a recent update or something have caused it?

I've seen this exact behaviour before. I put it down to a poor driver even though it worked fine.

It might be worth running wireshark to see if you are getting any inbound packets at all.
