Can you use an R1 key with R2 media (CD1)

Hi, I need to find the Server 2003 enterprise R1 media as I am sending a server off to a datacenter who will put there key on AFTER I have installed it at my home (in order for me to install all drivers etc within the 30-day period where a key is not needed). They only have R1 keys.

 

I saw someone mention that disc 1 of the R2 kit is just 2003 enterprise with sp1. Can I just install this disc with the R1 key ignoring the second or is it different to a plain r1 disc.

 

If so, I cant seem to find any R1 media kits anywhere so thats leaving me with a bit of a problem. All of microsofts trial ISO's have been changed to r2 as well.

I tried to install R2 with my R1 key and it didnt work. I had to hunt about for ages for my docs with the R2 key on it. This was Standard not Enterprise though. Could be different.

Yes this is correct. Personally I would recommend you create a new slipstream disc which includes Server 2003 SP2. I also use nLite to slipstream the required drivers, so once you've installed Windows Server, there's nothing to do other than visiting Windows Update and downloading everything you need. Installing R2 would require an additional product key.
