nyallm Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 We are nice and secure internally from childeren accessing the likes of facebook but we are now finding that children on home computers access facebook and sometime make comments about the school and teachers - has anyone a policy that allows for this in its wording. nyallm Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Matt - thanks for the prompt reply. These are 11 year old kids that just do this thing without thinking - the two children have been dealt internally but in the future we need to put this into the AUP or something similar.
matt40k Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 (edited) You can't official put anything about doing anything at home, you can, put something about accessing material created at home which might breach the schools AUP etc. Not sure of the official wording however. Shame really, because you want to deal with it internally but not always possible if you go down the "by the book" route. Generally I would point out that because it's not done in school it's a police matter so they understand the fact that you are dealing with it internally at the school level you are infact doing them a favour. rh91uk Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Unfortunastley we were always very "trusting" of our kids here (and were very trusting when I was a student!) but due to some recent events, involving young people, I am in discussions with my SMT to impose such a restriction in the AUP about the safety online and the schools name online. Some pretty horrible stuff was being posted, and whereas the school need to take a backseat sometimes as it is out of school, there are boundaries where the school need to step in and unfortunatley we have had a few cases like that!

Should schools be censoring what children do out of school. Whatever happened to freedom of speech? I think a school could find itself in serious trouble by 'punishing' for an act that was not committed at school. If they do post something considered libel then the law still applies.
