If you wanted to move away from fixed width things and take account of the fact that some users may browse with an increased font size which would break your fixed width boxes, you may find the

white-space: nowrap

property as detailed at CSS White-space Property handy.

last time i saw this in css it wouldn't validate with the latest standards, never figured out why, I just deleted it as i'd rather the layout be iffy when text is sized up than it disappearing off the edge of the containers.
