Mouse wheel does not work on Ubuntu

I've installed Ubuntu server to an old Compaq server just to ha a play with linux but one thing bugs me, the mouse wheel does not work.

 

I've tested the mouse with XP and it works perfectly, the mouse is an old Microsoft Trekker.

 

Is there a way of getting the mouse wheel to work with ubuntu?

what is an Xorg.conf and where would I find it?

xorg.conf is what controls the graphics environment (and in turn has parameters in place for the input devices).

 

It's located in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
