Little-Miss Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Hi, the network had a bit of a wobble the other day so i rebooted the server. Whilst i was waiting for it to boot i noticed that one of the switches (Cisco Catalyst 3750) had an Amber port... Looking at Catalyst 3750 Hardware Installation Guide - Troubleshooting [Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series Switches] - Cisco Systems its a post fault (they only time i know they went down is either during a fan installation or when we had a bit of a power failure in there...) I'm going to try and find out what is connected to port 35 (dont think any of the sockets are labelled though!) Where do i start to find out what the cause is?
SYNACK Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 (edited) It is probably just a host that is connected at 100 or 10 mbits instead of a gig as these show up amber. It would only be post if it came up solid amber just after switch power on and stayed that way. Edited January 8, 2009 by SYNACK 1

Probably not, our ones do this when an older station or printer with an old 100mbit card is plugged in, some pcs also drop the speed to 10mbit when they are off to save power but still need to listen for WOL packets. I would check it by going into the web interface or the console and checking to see if the port shows as active and what speed it is at. If that is not an option you could swap the cable from the amber one to another port to see if it goes amber. This will narrow it down to the host. You could also run the switch through post if you are there when no one else is by restarting it and then watching it go through its post sequence. All lights flash on simultaniously then go out one by one as they are identified as ok before the switch continues to boot. If one went amber at that stage it would require further investigation.

Nice when you get something to working when others have failed. You'd need the advanced firmware installed to play with BGP, but they can do rather nice layer 2 switching and some of the smaller routing protocols with the standard firmware

I decided to throw myself in at the deep end and get a little NM job so i have the chance to learn. Last boss wouldnt let me near the network so got no experience.

matt40k Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 @SYNACK I can get an EMI image easy enough, I just need a switch!! @Little-Miss Yer, only way to do it, I was lucky enough to be at a school that need someone to learn and maintain the systems, they offered me a job then it went from there. Lucky I didn't make many mistakes, the fact I had good backups helped. Then was able to know a few people who helped me do some games hosting at Sov House in London, still stopped doing it when the price of a rack went from £300 to over £1500 pm. Still when I sold the servers, switches and my openbgpd router etc and moved out into my own place. Do wonder if I should of reg'd as a company sometimes. Still I was sharing most my network with a few other geeks, I believe one of them, who bought most my stuff is now a company, wonder how thats going... might have to give him a ring. What school you at? Sounds like you've got a nice job there.
