Ive got a laptop here with about 6 gb of music. She got a new ipod thing for christmas, and tried to get her music from the old ipod onto the new one.

Something didnt work apparently, so she's uninstalled itunes and reinstalled it, and tried to readd the music to the itunes. But whenever you open itunes it starts to "analyse the music for gapless playback", gets to about song 150 / 3000, and then locks up the machine.

Ive never used one of these things before, or itunes or anything, but I said id help her out. Its not a very powerful machine, only had 256mb ram (ive just put in another 256 to see if that might make a diff)

Anything I need to know / any reason this would lock up? What is the gapless scan its doing? Is it necessary?

Any itunes users able to help would be much appreciated, thanks

From previous experience it just visibly locks up, if you check the process it is still working hard.

Gapless playback is for things where song 1 mixes into song 2 seamlessly, you dont want itunes putting a 1 second gap in there for you.

This "lockup" also happens when you try to drag 10+ songs into a playlist, my pc is a Dual core 3Ghz, 4Gb 1066mhz RAM etc... and it even does it on that for about 3-4 seconds.

Ive added the whole "my music" folder to the playlist. 3000+ songs. It definately does lock up because it worked its way through the first 150 songs, and then stopped. I left it overnight and it still wasnt done.

On looking at it again. Its seems to be the same song it keeps stopping at. so ill try deleting that one...

thanks for the reply. I forgot to post a follow up to this.

Turns out it was errors on the laptop HD that were causing the problems.

I ran a chkdsk which took almost an hour and a half, and after that it added the 3000+ songs in about 3 mins with no problems.

Im not quite sure what prompted me to do the chkdsk, but I was glad I did.
