network folder redrirection management

We recently set up a new domain and are currently having a problems with folder redirection \\curricsrv\students\%username%

 

What are the usual problems to look out for please?

I try to have it set up so that in windows explorer on a default profile it points to

 

\\servername\homes\%username%

 

That way I force that profile to be the default one.
