Nozza Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Hi I'd appreciate some tips on how to approach this. We use the Virtual CD app across the school to access media files like DVDs and CD-ROMs. On two PCs in the same location the playback is stuttering and unusable. I've checked the codecs are right but to no avail. I'm thinking it might be a network problem - slow/bottleneck. How would I go about troubleshooting this? Is there a way of monitoring the flow of that sort of data etc? thanks N
danrhodes Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Hey, Try using Agilent Network Analyzer this can monitor lots of different protocols. Otherwise try unsing wire shark for something a bit more basic. D
Nozza Posted December 16, 2008 Author Posted December 16, 2008 OK I have wireshark but no idea how to use it to troubleshoot this particular problem. I've plugged my laptop into the ethernet socket and it has the same jittering playback. I can see the server with the video on it talking to my laptop IP but I don't know what this is telling me. Is there a way of testing the speed of a particular network segment to see if it's running at it's rated speed?
SimpleSi Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Is there a way of testing the speed of a particular network segment to see if it's running at it's rated speed? Just try copying a large file to/from your server with your laptop in different ports and compare times. regards Simon
pagelad Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I use a free program called terracopy to measure file speeds, Just get am image on the server, install it to the workstation and copy it.. ikt will show you the speed on the top bar. Then i just work my way back through the network, Different ports on the switch closest to the workstation, then if theres another switch after i try that etc, if its just the one machine different cables. I had this problem before xmas and it turned out it was plugged into a managed switch and someone fiddled with the settings on a particular port. Copy your files faster with TeraCopy
chrbb Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Just thinking outside the box - have you tried the computer in a different room or copied the dvd image to the computer and run it locally rather than across the network, just to determine whether it's a network issue or individual computer problems.
