Testing out some software which they're offering for free so they don't have to provide support before trying to make something similar for their own systems?

 

Some programmer's pet project which they decided to use as a promotional tool?

 

Trying to boost anything which isn't the open source Google offering?

 

I can think of plenty of reasons they could've done this.
