Password protecting home networks

My daughter has purchased an iPod touch recently and is taking great delight in looking at people's wireless network security while we are on car journeys.

 

From her success rate at connecting it looks like a good 10% of home networks aren't password protected. In one particular traffic jam, she managed to find connections for well over a mile!

 

These same people are probably carefully shredding their bank statements, but probably have out of date AV on their PCs

 

I have been sufficiently concerned to put a notice in the staff room - reminding people that a password is a good move!

We had an issue with kids from school logging on to neighbours open wireless networks and looking at porn on their phones.

 

We sent out a letter to the neighbours in question (netstumbler + gps works great) advising them they were insecure etc.

 

(Our main building is in a residential area surrounded with houses)
