BT Homehub ARP requests

Hi

 

Ive got a BT Homehub which im not using as the actual router for the broadband its just a spare AP. Ive noticed its making alot of ARP requests (more than any other device) and its making them alot.

 

I've attached some screenshots from wireshark. Is this just something because of the homehub or is it somesort of network mis-configuration.

 

The range im using is 192.168.1.0-192.168.3.0/255.255.252.0. The BT Homehub is 192.168.1.5 (its Thompson...etc on the wireshark logs).

 

The thing ive noticed is that there is no such device as 192.168.1.150, 192.168.1.50 and 192.168.3.203

No but seriously, unless you're seeing a *lot* of arp requests, it's reasonably normal. Generally arps to dead devices are because they have been there in the past and the hub's just checking up on them, and the BT hub can have phones connected to it so it sometimes arps for them, etc. And of course it's a BT hub, so it's probably just lonely anyway.

my old bt business 2wire did that as well. Apparently thats the way it builds its list of known devices on the network. Did a bit of research at the time.

 

Dunno about the thompson.

Out of interest, how and why did you discover this?

Is it running wep encryption? someone's trying to crack the wep key if it is.
