Have Asus EEE will travel

One of the staff is about to bunk off to Rwanda for a few months and wants to take a lightweight laptop with them. I think they've got ideas about blogging and stuff, probably surfing the net, a bit of wordprocessing. I'm interested in these ultraportable/netbook type things but I've not seen them up close and personal yet. Does an Asus EEE PC1000 sound a suitable thing for the job? What can't they do? She's not likely to be working with 40-column spreadsheets or playing Grand Theft Auto.

Cheap & Robust. Take a few, and let the locals use them.

For basic stuff such as word processing, blogging or general internet access and so on they're perfect. 3D rendering and hosting complex databases they might be a bit pushed, but saying that I do know someone who's got one of the earlier versions running as a streaming media server.

 

They're also fairly robust and sturdy, and relatively light. Pretty much perfect for the type of thing she seems to be after.

Good robust little laptops....excellent for blogging , internet...even excel and word etc....however the 1000 models are quite largish comparatively speaking and cost wise also push into bigger more powerful laptop money...I would stick with the 901's which are smaller and cheaper but just as good.

 

When buying 1000's the advantages seem to disappear because they are heavier, and larger and for the money you pay you can get something which is far better specd.
