User cannot logon wirelessly but...

Hi

 

One of the teachers cannot logon wirelessly on her laptop but once logged on using an ethernet cable/port she can use the wireless network with no problems.

 

Any ideas on this?

What is your wireless network setup? what are you using for authentication of users?

Do you use the Windows utility or a 3rd party one to connect to the wireless? If a 3rd party use the Windows one, that should cure it.

Would this happen to be an Intel wireless card by any chance? If so check that the drive isn't configured to only switch the card on after logon. This being a (mis)feature of some such drivers. Especially, but not always, the Intel utility is handing the wireless configuration.

Can you ping the laptop over the wireless link at the login screen? This will prove/disprove the other posts here.

I'm a bit hazy on this. I've literally just joined the school and so will need to check exactly how it's set up. Also my wireless experience is limited. Do you have some suggestions on exactly what to check in order for me to answer this fully?

Yes it is an intel wireless card. Browing the settings of it I didn't notice a setting that obviously covered such a feature - don't suppose you know which

one it would be do you?

Get the latest Intel drivers direct from Intel too, that makes a difference.

Especially given that the drivers supplied by some vendors, such as Dell, turn off what Intel calls "prelogon connect" and make it not very obvious to turn on.
