Opening swf files

A teacher's come back off a course with some .swf file resources and was told to just right-click and use open-with Internet Explorer to use them (and said that's what the course instructor did)

 

This didn't work on her laptop and doesn't work for me on this computer either.

 

Should it? - googling seems to bring up a lot of variations as whether it should or not.

 

File can be inserted into Smart Notebook as workaround.

VLC here. If you want to play them in a browser, you need to wrap them up in the correct HTML tags otherwise they wont play.

Most of the .swf files we have here open in IE7 OK, I've just tested a few and all fine, guess they must have the html tags in place as Geoff mentioned.

 

If you don't want to go down that route though, I'd agree with the suggestion of the EOLSOFT flv player (from mattx's link in his post above), used that before and it's a good'un.

Thanks for info - the wierd thing is that I'd thought I'd used the open in IE method before - maybe you could in the old days

If I haven't got a dedicated viewer open I just drag an swf onto an IE window, worked with IE6 and IE7 no problems. That's assuming you've got the flash reader plugin installed.

 

Irfanview with all the plugins installed works well for almost everything and it's free.
