Running Canon EOS Utility as a regular user

I have a user that needs to run Canon EOS Utility for remote shooting.

 

The utility installs and runs fine until you attach the camera and then it just dissappears (unless I try running it as an administrative user).

 

I have run Process Explorer and seem to have narrowed it down to some .NET component trying to access something to which it does not have permission.

 

I'm running out of ideas... any help would be much appreciated.

If you know the name of the component, look at the dot net configuration util under Administrative Tools, you should be able to tweak the permissions until it runs.

That seems to be the event log error message. Where do I go to try to find a fix?

Assuming you're running the app from a local drive... Google suggests that's a bog-standard, "I'm afraid I can't let you do that Dave" - just the dot Net version.

 

Does it try to write camera data / config on a per-user basis, possibly to a daft location like Program Files?

I have tried opening up write access to areas within Program Files and wot-not to no avail. Running FileMon as I ran it as a domain admin didn't show up any funny write locations either.

 

It is truly bizzarre.

 

Do no other schools teach remote shooting in their photography courses?

I just added my 'dummy' staff account to the local administrators group to see if I could maybe make it run once and then it would work from there. It doesn't work though!!!

 

So from what I can tell you either have to be a domain administrator or the machine account administrator!!!

What happens if you wds/ris a box with a standard xp sp3 install and dot net 3.5, but don't join it to the domain - does the local admin account work then?
