Cubase 4

Hi All,

 

We have 12 workstation is our Music Department, they are all part of a vanilla network using AD and Windows Server 2003.

 

Half of the machines have Cubase 3 installed, the other half have Cubase 4 installed.

 

 

When a user with admin priviledges logs onto the workstation they can open Cubase 3 or Cubase 4 and use the program correctly using the supplied dongle that is installed in the rear of the workstation.

 

But when a student logs onto the machine they can get access to the icon and the splash screen appears when the program is double clicked, but they then get an error message saying that the USB dongle is not recognised.

 

I have tried giving the Security Group "Students" access to both the Program Folder "Synchsoft" which is the program that controlls the USB dongle and licencing. Also to the folder "Steinberg" which is the main Cubase Program Directory.

 

Neither of these quick solutions have made any difference when trying to open ether Cubase 3 or Cubase 4.

 

If anybody has any information, or has either program install and running, please could you post the details here.

Run FileMon and RegMon on the computer.

Open Cubase and look for where it queries/writes to.

Strange. We have Cubase SX3 on about 15 PCs (and VST before that). All installed using admin rights, obviously, but can happily be run from student accounts without any issues from the Syncrosoft Dongle.

 

What restrictions have you got in place on your student accounts... perhaps one of them is causing a problem.

Have you got restrictions on USB devices for students?

 

Used to have a problem when I installed a USB dongle on 1 machine only for it to need installing on every USB port. The pupils used to pull it out and plug it in to a different connection, primarly because of lack of room. But every time they did this it would error out - requesting installatoin again - and needed to be done by an admin.

 

As j17sparky has said, try finding out where the software need access to and check the permisions.

Nope no restriction on USB, Im going to try the Filemon and Regmon suggetions.
