Linking Two Buildings Problem

We are trying to link two building about half a mile apart..

 

We want the computers in the outbuilding to be part of the main school network..

 

between the two buildings is 2 roads and 2 x 3 story high blocks of flats so line of sight in not possible nor is digging a trench..

 

Any ideas on how to link the buildings ?

VPN is the obvious option. Failing that, perhaps a microwave link?

Wouldn't a Microwave Link require line of sight? If speed and price are both not an issue - you could use a couple of satellite dishes

Ah yes. :/ Are there any shiny surfaces nearby you can bounce the microwave link via? Is turning up the power and burning hole through the flats ok?

You could attempt to find out if there is already a direct link via pipe/or manhole between the 2 sites already then run your fiber between the two using a mole. Try your council comms team or BT and see if they will help.

Buy a flat in the block, and put a wireless receiver and re-transmitter at either side of the building

Copy the data packets to floppy disk and get some kids to run them between sites?

Motorola Canopy PTP bridges will do it with a bit of luck and a decent installer.

Other than that you are in leased line territory.

Create a coms relay blimp and station it 5 miles up, advantage being that you can smite your enemies with well aimed armour piecing tungsten carbide rods of death. though at low altitude they will not reach hyper velocities, then again most lusers lack suitable ballistics armour anyway.

I would defo go with the floppy disk idea, this sound like the most stable idea, just hire a few pupils on miniumu wage and get them to move the data on disk :-).

I thought I'd point out two errors in your post, sorry. You used the word 'hire' and 'national minimum wage'. I'm sure it was a pure lapse of judgment on your part and not an intentional typo?

 

We have a system of 'runners' here. Basically a small group of year 8 kids pulled out of lessons for the day to run messages between sites.

 

There is certainly no mentioning of 'hiring' or 'wages' here. They are 'chosen' to 'volunteer'.
