Currently I use REAL VNC to access LINUX systems as well as Windows. When accessing my LINUX and UNIX systems I have no stability issues. However when accessing a windows machine I find that the connections simply closes out without warning quite often. Is ther a fix for this?

Not noticed it myself, sometimes resolution changes on the remote end can break VNC but we use UltraVNC not Real so can't really comment.

Sorry!

In this particular case there is no resolution change to take place. The machine we access does not have a monitor connected and sits in a server room. Thanks for the feedback.

We have noticed it occasionally falls over but over all it is reliable. If it does fall over we use a remote service killer to kill winvnc and then restart the service using the MMC.

We use UltraVNC, and I've noticed that VNC can drop out if the system has high CPU usage, either due to other processes, or if the VNC viewer is configured for max colours and is taxing the system as a result. Try manually setting the viewer to use a lower colour depth.

VNC can be quite flakey on windows. There's one machine we can view but can't interract with at all (the settings are all correct) and there's another one which just goes absolutely nuts (kills you, stops you from using it, garbled display e.t.c.) which is a 64 bit machine.

Video Driver bugs can crash VNC sessions too. Try updating your drivers or using the default Microsoft SVGA driver (on servers).

All good comments. I downloaded ULTRA VNC yesterday. Unfortunately the same problem exists. A little more on our system. The system accessed is not a manned machine. It simply runs a program that must be monitored constantly from afar. The technician monitoring it does not interact with it at all they simply watch for errors. Don't even use a mouse on it unless of course they lose connection then they must once again log in. My fear is that something will get missed if they do not log in on time.

I believe I have answered my own question. And hopefully this can help anyone else with the same sort of need. The answer came in my comment that the machine used to access the remote server was only monitoring and there was no direct interaction. Well then the computer becomes somewhat inactive even though we have set it to not go to screen saver. So I started process that keeps the machine busy. Since this we have not lost connectivity. However we did find some stability on a Windows 2000 machine which I quickly updated to XP. Problem appears to be taken care of now. Thanks again to all for the good feedback.
