I've just finished 2 suites, one had plenty of space so it's around 1m spacing but the other one is smaller and I didn't think I'd get 30 computers in but I just about managed at 600cm. Some are slightly less but the kids are fine with it. They are up to Y7 and use stools, so that may be a factor.

What systems did you use in the small suite?

The ultra small footprint HP DC7900 with the piggyback monitor. To be honest, I'm not sure that the system size is that relevant as they all tend to be narrower than the keyboard/mouse.

Nice photos. I’m in the process of planning a new ICT suite and was wondering what you have spaced the machines at?

 

When originally asked to look at the building plans and recommend a room layout I went with Becta's spacing recommendations - and with good reason, this ICT suite is also a working art room and you can expect to have wodges of glue and bits of paper flying around the place. That fitted about 10 machines in. We changed the layout to squeeze in 16, but then when the PCs turned up we wound up with 18 in the room. Ironically, we've still only bought 10 licenses for the music software as, of course, you can only fit one MIDI keyboard per two workstations.

What music software have you used David? That's the next job. Well it would have been but the Music Dept. didn't clean out there room in time and whilst they have been off snowbound, I've used their new computers to replace the ones in the admin office.

I installed Sibelius just after the summer holidays with few problems (okay, so it requires a Windows-based license server to work, but that turned out to be okay for us as we had a spare license for one of our virtual servers), Cubase is due to be installed during half term as it needs a physical dongle to be installed in each machine before it will run. I'd have preferred to use Ubuntu studio or similar, but the music teacher had heard of Sibelius and Cubase so that's what we spent money on. Am suitably impressed with the Edirol USB keyboards, though - £50-odd each, USB-based MIDI controller device, USB powered as well so no huge great AC/DC converter needed, just the ticket.
