Hi.

I was thinking that ive got a HTC TyTn doing nack all here, and was thinking that it would be handy for switch diagnostics.

Now due to the fact that it hasnt got a serial port or ethernet port, it'd have to be WiFi.

So is there such a device thats small enough for me to carry around, plug into a switch, and then use this Windows Mobile based device to access it?

Or any other ideas for uses for it? lol.

Thanks in advance all. :).

What?

Sounds like you have a new toy.

What do you mean by switch diagnostics? You can monitor it by SNMP, check a port would mean you need a ethernet port.

Thats what you would use the bluetooth to serial adapter for, the XDA dev page has links to both the adapter (Buy a LM Technologies Bluetooth RS-232 Adaptor (Serial, 100m), #LM058-SINGLE - eXpansys Finland) and the software (mToken :: Overview | Choung Networks) that you would need to telnet into it.

The Tytn already has WiFi built in I thought which you could use to connect to the switch through the existing WiFi network at your school using a telnet program and accessing it by its ip rather than directly through the bluetooth dongle above.

Surely you just connect to your wireless network and then telnet, ssh or web browse to the switches ip to administer it?

The hardware ports are only needed for emergency access really.

Why does everyone think we already have site wide WiFi here? I havnt said that at all! :p.

I'll have to google around for the BT/RS232 thing, see if i can find it any cheaper than £100. :p.

I've always used a really old laptop for switch diag stuff.

P100 with huge 64mb a cut down bsd os

or

AMD Athlon XP laptop with windows xp

Both cost under £50. And they'll look less like your showing off with your phone with a huge serial port attached!!

You could get a pocket size wifi access point all configured up with an ip and security etc... then you plug that into the switch you want to access and connect with device to that access point?

Would be cheaper than £100 but a bit bulkier.

I have a compact buffalo wla-g54c you could have for a tenner.
