redirected SM/desktop question

sorry, having an early brainfart moment and just cannot think straight.

i've got redirected start menus and desktops for staff but have also just allowed the server to cache one domain password so that they can log on at home using their network login (rather than giving them local admin or creating new users). i'll explain that they can't access my docs but can use it with a pen drive or whatever they see fit.

i just cant remember if the machine off the network will use the local profile and desktop/sm if no network one is found, or if it will hang on loading the start menu as its constantly searching for it.

When using Group Policy to redirct your Desktop and Start Menu the re-directed item will only be available if the workstation is connected to the network.

 

If the user logs on locally or using a cached network profile then the re-directed Desktop and Start Menu will not be available thus will not be loaded into the user profile.

 

The way to get around this is to create a folder on the Local Drive of the workstation, load all your items that you wish to be located on the users Start Menu and Desktop. Then use GP to redirect to that location, for example "C:\Redirect\StartM" and "C:\Redirect\DeskT"

 

If you also want the folders to be re-directed when logging in locally use the local GPEDIT.MSC to configure the same GP Objet to redirect when a network cannot be reached.

Our staff are able to access desktop and start menu offline.

We redirected the desktop inside there mydocuments folder so the desktop comes across with there my documents.

 

For the start menu, on gpo go to User configuration/admin templates/network/offlinefiles/administratively assigned offline files, in files and folders add the value which would be the share for start menu.

how do you maintain the consistency of "C:\Redirect\StartM"?

Hi,

 

A Better method would be to re-direct the start menu to a Shared path eg: \\servernam\sharename then keep that location up to date.

 

Or if you want to host the files locally just use a startup script to copy any changes.
