2008 Preferences GPO's and Vista

Has anyone had a go with these yet?

 

i want to replace our logon scripts with the new group policy preference feature in 2008. Whilst I can create a desktop shortcut (for all users) to a local file or a URL, when I try creating one to point to an executable on a network share the shortcut isn't created/doesnt appear. I am using the exact path as specified and it does work if I browse to the file manually, it's just not appearing as a shortcut I am applying preferences to the computer objects as opposed to users, and have tested it by setting everyone to full control on the share incase it was a permissions issue

Not with Vista clients.. blerghh.. and haven't gone near shortcuts yet. One thing that might be worth quickly trying is using FQDNs in your UNCs e.g.

 

\\MyServer.example.net\Share\..

 

as opposed to:

 

\\MyServer\Share\...

 

Permissions issues seems a bit more likely though. Are the NTFS perms behind that shortcut share also OK? Do 'Authenticated Users' (computer accounts in this case) have Read access? Does the event log say anything? So far I've found the preferences CSE does seem to log useful app log events when it fails to so something.

Thanks, I'll have another go with the FQDN tomorrow. I've set authenticated users with full control on the test share and full control on th NTFS permissions.

Been using them since the start of this academic year, we build the start menu, delete shortcuts on desktops from programs like Encarta / Adobe and even map the drives and install printers with them.

 

Seems pretty smooth so far.

 

As for the problem you are facing, we deploy all shortcuts on a per-user basis. I guess the computer way would work providing you are putting the shortcut in the local all users-desktop folder?
