I have a spare large capacity drive I want to put in a case and use as transportable storage, but all the cases I have looked at seem to have external power supplies with them. Is it only 2.5 drives that can get away without power supplies or can someone suggest a case for a 3.5 drive that does not require external power?

It is not possible. The 3.5" / 5.25" drives need two voltage supply: 5 V and 12 V, and the USB and Firewire bus can only supply 5 V. Furthermore the USB/Firewire bus power is limited to 500 mA (5 V)which is not enough for the 3.5"/5.25" drives

You mean a 5.25" caddy? Works well, but does require all computers you'll be using it in to have matching caddy slots.
