Can't get into Server Admin

I have a server running 10.3.9 server. Can't be updated because of picky software it is running. Things have been fine for about 2 years but starting 2 weeks ago I was having issues getting some things to launch, so I launched Server Admin to check things out and... it can't find itself. I have tried localhost, 127.0.0.1, its IP, and it's domain name all to no avail, I also tried accessing it from another Mac Server's Admin through IP and Domain name which also didnt work. It does respond to ping at all of those addresses locally and is somewhat working as it is hosting a website and FTP that are up.

I have tried killing and restarting the servermgrd process which also does no good. I am unsure if I can DL the 10.3.9 update and use it to run file permissions repair or not but that is about all I can think of. Any one on edugeek that can throw me a line? Thanks in advance.

It sure does sound like a DNS issue to me. Have you tried restarting the DNS service using the command line? Thats if the DNS service is indeed running on your OS X server.

I personally don't think it's a dns issue....most who've encountered this problem seem to have resolved it by applying a delta update and then reinstalling admin tools, they've also gone through the steps of checking setupmgr process is running as root that the ts has done.

 

Must be a pretty rubbish application that's preventing you from upgrading to 10.4....but then again this problem has been reported in various versions of 10.4 so it's not to say it couldn't appear again, but i personally have never encountered it. I've encountered many other anomalies in 10.4 server but not that particular one.

 

I would advise threadstarter to get in touch with their apple resellers support department and have them advise, or ditch the 10.3.9 app and upgrade to 10.4.x....10.4 is way better, especially once you've found a version that doesn't break something somewhere in your osx environment.

Yes i agree torledo. After re-reading, it doesn't sound like DNS as he was using Ip address as well.

 

I would also second the upgrade to 10.4.x. It was the area i started in OS X and so far i think it was 10.4.9 that was the best version. 10.5 has so far been a bit of a pest for me. Here's hoping 10.5.5 is going to be a little better.
