We were originally relying on our LEA (Salford) for DHCP, but about a month ago we moved to our own and had them switch theirs off. Now we are getting odd problems on the network - Group Policy not applying (software Installations, Folder Redirections, etc) We did IPCONFIG /ALL and got this result.. The only 2 solutions we have is to A) Move to Static IPs or B) add in our own DNS Suffix (pupils.mhs.internal). We have currently gone for option B which seems to be working. Salford are advising that our scope is inactive on their side, but we still get their suffix and WINS info through.. Anyone know how to block this or know why its happening?
Geoff Posted March 30, 2006 Posted March 30, 2006 You can set the DNS suffix in the Group Policies. You can set the WINS server in the DHCP scope options.
Gatt Posted March 31, 2006 Author Posted March 31, 2006 D'oh! forgot about GPO :? As for WINS we arent using WINS on the network for the kids so need to try and block it . (Port 137?)
_Bob_ Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 There's still quite a lot of stuff that relies on WINS. You would be better putting a WINS server in place and adding it to DHCP scope options.
DMcCoy Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 I've not used wins in 3 years with windows 2003 and xp. I know some reasons why I will probably want it in the future, but you often don't need it.
Geoff Posted March 31, 2006 Posted March 31, 2006 2k/2k3/XP uses DNS instead of WINS now. That's why many problems get traced back to DNS.
