Start2.bin method no longer working

I used to use the start2.bin file copy method to deploy pinned items, its been a while since I needed to change it but now it doesn't seem to work anymore

 

When I pin a new item, the start2.bin file for that user doesn't change (i.e datestamp doesn't change) and when they logoff/login again the pinned item has disappeared again

 

I was fully expecting MS to break this at some point as they seem to go out of their way to stop local Start Menu customisation, but has this happened recently, or is it just me?

Same here, I think it's since they released the 'Improved' start menu (with the categories / grid options) about 4 months ago? I've stopped worrying about it too much as it seems most of our users don't ever use the start menu anyway!

Its a shame, it was quite useful but I'll have to let staff know the old ways no longer work...

Still seems to be working for us, on 25h2 with latest updates.

 

That said, I've not attempted to make any changes, I'm using the same bin files as when we first moved to Win 11. 

 

The main thing I'm clinging onto this for is to put a prominent "log off" shortcut pinned to the Start Menu, rather than the click your name, then click Sign out, route.

It still works for us but if you pin any new items they disappear on logout and the start2.bin seems unmodified. Thanks MS for another backwards step
