Schools Need Better AI Guidence

An interesting piece from the TES here - https://www.tes.com/magazine/news/general/schools-desperate-clearer-ai-guidance and probably is the start of addressing the various issues AI use places on schools.

 

Teachers are “desperate” for clearer guidance on how AI should be used in schools, MPs have been told.

Pip Sanderson, director of teacher development at the National Institute of Teaching, told the Commons Education Select Committee that school leaders were struggling to respond to the rapid growth of AI.

I have mixed feelings about this.  There is a lot of advice and guidance about AI and about it in Education so why are school leaders not acting on that?  I agree that exam boards need to get a kick up the posterior to move on things like online exams and how the whole exam process needs to be updated to fit the modern world, but beyond that a school or Trust needs to decide its own guidelines.

 

I can't count the number of times teachers have said the Government or the DfE need to keep out of schools more, but here they want top cover?

Maybe the DfE doesn't have a clue either!

 

As for coursework kids can cut and paste from the internet as it is so the problem is the same but in a different wrapper.

 

My solution for course work would be to change the criteria and make each pupil do a 10 minute Q&A where they are asked questions about their piece of work.   That would show up those who haven't done the leg work.  Of course here would be pupils who had but had SEND issues such as elective mute but there must be some kind of provision for this?
